Cohort & Team Building

Building belonging through intentional design. A key goal of P2SCS is cultivating a supportive peer community.

Intentional Cohorting

P2SCS participants are grouped into cohorts during summer immersion and remain together throughout the summer. These small, consistent groups help students develop trust, shared goals, and social support as they face the rigor of early technical classes. Cohorting also enables peer accountability and builds familiarity across different aspects of the program.

Team-Based Assignments

Workshops and labs emphasize collaborative problem solving. Students often work in teams where rotating roles (driver/navigator, summarizer/questioner) ensure balanced participation and knowledge sharing. These activities also mirror industry expectations for teamwork and communication.

Community Building Activities

Early bonding experiences like icebreakers, game nights, and outdoor excursions establish a sense of belonging. Many of these events are co-led by returning scholars or peer mentors, reinforcing a sense of legacy and community ownership.

Theoretical Foundations

Cohorting and peer collaboration are grounded in Tinto's theory of retention and Vygotsky’s social constructivism. Both theories highlight the importance of social integration and guided interaction for learning. The P2SCS program structures these opportunities to maximize support, encourage identity formation, and reduce feelings of isolation among underrepresented students.
